Side Effects of Fish Oil

By Barton Murray of Natural News Moxxor Team

The sales of fish oil is booming world-wide and on the surface it seems good reason. Fish oil has been touted as the remedy for almost all things health related. It appears that consumers are becoming aware of their benefits for the heart, joint health and mental function. However, there are hidden dangers that may off-set any of these so-called benefits.

Negative Side Effect #1

Fish oil is easily oxidized and a team at New Zealand's Crop & Food Research institute believe that industry's failure to control this process could be putting consumers at risk. In an extensive study they found that many fish oils available to the public were oxidized way prior to the expiration date. This means that the fish oil has become rancid and the opposite effect occurs (poor health) of the very reason they would supplement with it in the first place. You see, oxidation of fish oil is NOT GOOD. "Oxidized oils and fats of other types have been shown to increase the risk of atherosclerosis and thrombosis in a small number of human trials. These effects have been seen with relatively low levels of oxidized product - similar to a regular dose of fish oil capsules," said scientist Rufus Turner. Many times the consumer is unaware due to the thick gelatin coatings around the fish oil capsules.

Negative Side Effect #2

The data concerning the level of mercury in commercial fish oil supplements are sparse. These data are critical if fish oil supplements are to be recommended for cardio-protective benefits in the general population. In another recent study, scientists measured the level of mercury in 5 commercial over-the-counter brands of fish oil to assess the risk of mercury toxicity from consumption of these dietary supplements. It was found that 3 out of 5 brands actually had higher levels of mercury than what was reported on the bottle. This should be seen as very disturbing as it seems you can not rely on certain labels anymore. In fact, the AMA actually recommends pregnant woman and children to limit their consumption of fish as the health risk of mercury poison outweigh the benefits of the fish itself.

Negative Side Effect #3

Lastly, I would like to ask you if you have ever thought about the ethics of killing large schools of top-of-the-food chain fish just for the fish oil. Do you think that is ecologically sustainable for the future. What will happen when the larger fish are over caught? I would argue that they already are in many of the world's once thriving seabeds. There is an alternative that has been put out for awhile called Krill Oil. What is Krill you ask? It is the tiny phytoplankton that the majority of the whale population eat to survive. They rely on Krill and if we take that away from them what will happen to a large population of the krill-eating whales? So, you see that both Fish Oil and Krill Oil are not only potentially harmful to your health, but also not sustainable for our future generations.

What it it all really comes down to is your own awareness and knowledge of the real facts of Fish Oil. There is another alternative to eating the oils of fatty fish. This supplement comes from green-lipped mussels and it is 248 times stronger than fish oil, without the mercury.
